The Machine Stops is Wilshere's first post-minimalist piece. While one strand of the composition is driven by the rhythmic canons — reminiscent of the American minimalists — that characterised his earlier work, that material is progressively juxtaposed with a more reflective and lyrical line of inquiry, recalling the English Romantics. As each strand is developed, the two elements compete for dominance. While minimalism "wins on points" here, in later pieces Wilshere would go on to further develop this blend of compositional techniques.
